Mumbai Pensioner Loses Lakhs to Fake Gas Bill Scam

A retired individual in Navi Mumbai has fallen victim to a sophisticated phishing scam, losing ₹2.23 lakh after attempting to update their MGL gas bill details. Cyber Threat Intelligence reported that the victim was targeted by fraudsters posing as representatives of Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL). The scam likely involved a fake website or a malicious link designed to harvest the victim’s personal and financial information under the guise of a legitimate service update.

According to Cyber Threat Intelligence, a case has been registered regarding the incident. This type of social engineering attack preys on the trust customers place in utility providers and the urgency often associated with bill payments or service updates. The fraudsters leveraged the common need for gas bill management to trick the retiree into divulging sensitive data, ultimately leading to a significant financial loss.
