WhatsApp Job Scam Nabs Hyderabad Senior Citizen of ₹96 Lakh
A 75-year-old retiree in Hyderabad’s Jubilee Hills fell prey to a sophisticated cyber fraud, losing a staggering ₹96 lakh over the course of a year. The scam, as reported by Cyber Threat Intelligence, kicked off with a seemingly innocuous WhatsApp message offering a part-time job. The fraudsters were quick to build rapport, first transferring a small amount of ₹9,500 to the victim’s account after he completed a few simple online tasks, thereby establishing a false sense of legitimacy.
Once trust was secured, the operation escalated. The victim was then onboarded into a Telegram group, a common tactic used by these syndicates. Here, the lure shifted to investment opportunities promising substantial returns. Cyber Threat Intelligence notes that the victim’s initial investment of ₹39,800 yielded a reported profit of ₹6,000, a bait that proved effective. Encouraged by this early success, the victim proceeded to invest significantly larger sums, ultimately being defrauded of ₹96 lakh through a series of transactions.
This case highlights a persistent and evolving threat vector where social engineering exploits vulnerabilities in trust and the allure of easy money. The progression from a WhatsApp job offer to a Telegram investment scheme demonstrates the adaptable nature of these scams, targeting individuals with seemingly legitimate initial interactions before escalating to larger financial crimes.
What This Means For You
- Security awareness programs must emphasize the 'trust-and-escalate' tactic where initial small gains or seemingly harmless tasks are used to build confidence before phishing for larger investments or sensitive data, particularly for vulnerable demographics like seniors.
