Delhi Police Smash International Cyber Fraud Ring Using SIM Boxes
Delhi Police have successfully dismantled a sophisticated international cyber fraud syndicate that was leveraging illegal SIM Box technology to target Indian citizens. According to information from Cyber Threat Intelligence, the syndicate was behind both ‘digital arrest’ scams and fake investment schemes, highlighting a significant threat vector hitting the region.
The operation, spearheaded by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit, uncovered a well-organized network with operational links to handlers in Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries. Cyber Threat Intelligence reports that the fraudsters used these illegal GSM gateways to route international calls, making them appear as if they were coming from local Indian mobile numbers. This tactic is a common evasion technique designed to bypass detection and build a false sense of legitimacy with victims.
Two individuals, identified as Vaibhav Raj, 29, and Anil Kumar, 28, were apprehended in Mayur Vihar, East Delhi, following a tip-off flagged by suspicious telecom activity on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. A raid on a rented flat revealed a substantial operation, including a 32-slot SIM Box, over 350 SIM cards, multiple mobile phones, a laptop, and networking equipment, all indicative of large-scale illicit call routing. This bust underscores the persistent challenge posed by international cybercrime syndicates operating with significant technical infrastructure.
