Ransomware Landscape: US Dominates Targets, Healthcare Most Hit
Last week saw a significant uptick in ransomware activity, with reports indicating 154 total attacks. The United States continues to be the primary target, accounting for a staggering 72% of all incidents. Germany and the United Kingdom followed, though at a distant 7% each. The healthcare sector bore the brunt of these attacks, representing 24% of all targeted industries, highlighting its persistent vulnerability. Technology, retail, financial services, and manufacturing sectors also saw substantial targeting.
Leading the charge in malicious operations were ‘The Gentleman’ threat group, implicated in 31 attacks, and ‘Akira,’ responsible for 17. Other notable actors include ‘INC’ and ‘CoinBase Cartel,’ each linked to 10 attacks, and ‘ShadowByt3’ with 9. These figures underscore the dynamic and aggressive nature of current ransomware campaigns, with specific groups demonstrating considerable operational tempo.

- If your organization operates in the US, particularly within the healthcare sector, you need to immediately review your incident response plans and ensure all critical systems are patched and monitored. Focus on hardening defenses against common ransomware vectors like phishing and unpatched vulnerabilities.
